10 things I've said to hitters in the last 15 days

For the last 15 days, every time I said something to a hitter that I felt was a helpful I documented it. Remote or in person. Here's 10 I handpicked.

I wrote it down or made a voice note, to share with people who aren't in the room with me.

Here the the real words, with real hitters:

#1

"The swing was sucked because the decision sucked.

Ted Williams said you're only as good as the pitches you swing at.

So many hitters think their swing sucks when it was simply just a sucky swing decision."

#2

"Your mind likes visuals way more than it likes feels.

Instead of trying to stay back, just see where you want to let the ball get.

Your eyes won't let you slide past a contact point you're already looking at."

#3

"I want you to feel like you're swinging 1 ball above the pitch.

Right now you're swinging 1 ball below it.

It's just a feel. You don't actually do it. We have to trick your mind"

#4

"It's going to get ugly before it gets pretty.

If you're protecting yourself the whole time trying to keep it pretty,

You won't make the progress we're both looking for."

#5

"Right now, we need to slow it down so your mind doesn't protect you from moving differently because it wants to win.

Let's focus on the movements, then we will add the good movements that will help you win even more."

#6

"You trying to make it 1% better is how guys end up 10% worse.

Right now we don't need to break down your video

Keep swinging at good pitches, be on time, repeat what you're already doing."

#7

It's not about me being right. It's about getting it right.

Don't just take my word for it.

Watch the video and see if the feel matches the real.

It holds me accountable too.

#8

I know it sucks right now. It's all part of it.

Some of the best players I've ever trained have the ugliest cage sessions,

and then we put it all together and it made it all worth it.

#9

We need build him up mentally, not just physically.

He's in a really good spot.

We keep repeating the good moves and make sure he believes in himself.

#10

"Ten years ago I was mechanical before mental.

Now it's mental over mechanical but the way you think

The mind responds way better to visuals and external targets. That's how I found to create better mechanics without getting too mechanical"

I would love to hear which one hit home the most for you, reply and let me know!

When I'm training hitters, I'm always calculating one thing in my head. What's the simplest adjustment that will make the biggest impact? I tell hitters that when I'm staring into space, I'm computing.. haha. "If I say this, he'll do this." "I can't say this because he doesn't like it, or it didn't work for him." "If I say this, he'll overthink it, so I have to work around that idea." I do the calculating so you don't have to. To a certain extent though, right? There's a time and place for...

Pete Crow-Armstrong said something that should make a lot of hitters think.. In an interview weeks ago, he admitted it. Any time he struggled, he’d try to hit more. More cage time. More swings. More effort. HARDER. MORE. Now he’s trying to do less. Calm. Routine. Process. That’s the part most hitters will scroll past. Because it sounds backwards. But it’s the exact thing I’ve watched with my own guys for years. The hardest workers don’t always get the best results. Sometimes the guy who seems...
