I coached the wrong thing for years

I used the average column my whole career. Coached it too.

Then I created the elite column. Here's why.

I studied what the best hitters actually say to themselves, and sat down with mental coaches who had already figured it out.

"I'm the best hitter out here" was the one I used a lot.

Then you walk into a clubhouse with a Mike Trout in it. Or a Grady Emerson. Or a Dylan Seward. Guys who are flat out better than you.

Now you're lying to yourself and you know it.

A coach put it to me like this. Play well and you earn a better team. Better team, better players. Do that a few times and you're always pretending.

You built your identity on something that gets taken every time you level up.

What never gets taken is what you can control. Hardest out in the lineup. Make him earn every strike. True in any clubhouse, at any level, against anybody.

Train it

Tee + say the line out loud before you load. Every pitch
Boring before it's everything.

Front toss + pick a cue that fits the situation.

Live BP + use your cue the whole round.
Step out, breathe, one focus. Repeat.

Then in game, repeat it.

Screenshot the chart. Print it. Tape it where you get dressed.

The ones to lock in on this will be the ones that level up.
The ones who ignore or only try one day are going to be the hitters who always look for the quick fix.

Then later realize the best quick fix is realizing there is no quick fix. Be consistent and focused is the key.

If you need anything, reply to this,

When I'm training hitters, I'm always calculating one thing in my head. What's the simplest adjustment that will make the biggest impact? I tell hitters that when I'm staring into space, I'm computing.. haha. "If I say this, he'll do this." "I can't say this because he doesn't like it, or it didn't work for him." "If I say this, he'll overthink it, so I have to work around that idea." I do the calculating so you don't have to. To a certain extent though, right? There's a time and place for...

Pete Crow-Armstrong said something that should make a lot of hitters think.. In an interview weeks ago, he admitted it. Any time he struggled, he’d try to hit more. More cage time. More swings. More effort. HARDER. MORE. Now he’s trying to do less. Calm. Routine. Process. That’s the part most hitters will scroll past. Because it sounds backwards. But it’s the exact thing I’ve watched with my own guys for years. The hardest workers don’t always get the best results. Sometimes the guy who seems...
