What my barber taught me about hitting

I was getting a haircut and my barber said something that stuck with me.

“Every guy who sits in this chair tells me what they want.

Almost none of them can actually describe it.

They just show me a picture of someone else’s hair.”

I started laughing because that’s exactly what happens with hitters.

“I want to hit like [insert MLB player].”

Cool. But that guy is 6’2, 220 pounds, and has been training since he was 8 and he's now 28.

While we do want to look at MLB hitters because they ARE giving us clues.

We need to find what you need to achieve that, and pave your own route in your development.

The best hitters I work with aren’t trying to replicate anyone exactly.

They take bits and pieces, here and there.

They’re building a swing that fits THEIR body, THEIR strengths, THEIR needs.

That’s what makes a swing repeatable. When it’s yours.

My barber can’t give you Brad Pitt’s face. But he can give you the best version of YOUR hair.

Same thing in your swing.

"If I say this, he'll overthink it, so I have to work around that idea." I do the calculating so you don't have to. To a certain extent though, right? There's a time and place for...

Pete Crow-Armstrong said something that should make a lot of hitters think.. In an interview weeks ago, he admitted it. Any time he struggled, he’d try to hit more. More cage time. More swings. More effort. HARDER. MORE. Now he’s trying to do less. Calm. Routine. Process. That’s the part most hitters will scroll past. Because it sounds backwards. But it’s the exact thing I’ve watched with my own guys for years. The hardest workers don’t always get the best results. Sometimes the guy who seems...
